Disappearing messages have gone mainstream. Signal has had them for years. WhatsApp added them in 2020. iMessage followed with "Delete after viewing" and "Undo send." The feature is now table stakes for any serious messaging application. But not all disappearing messages are created equal, and each platform's implementation reflects its design priorities and business constraints.
Signal: The Gold Standard for Messaging
Signal's disappearing messages are the most technically rigorous. Messages are end-to-end encrypted with the Signal Protocol (a double-ratchet construction providing perfect forward secrecy), and disappearing timers are enforced on both the sender's and recipient's devices. When a message expires, it is deleted from local storage on both sides.
What Signal does well: The cryptographic foundation is beyond reproach. The deletion is genuine — Signal doesn't retain message content on its servers beyond the delivery queue. A subpoena to Signal yields metadata at best.
The gap: Signal requires both parties to have the app installed. It requires a phone number to register. For sending a one-time credential to a contractor, sharing a temporary key with a colleague, or communicating with someone who won't install Signal — it creates friction. Signal also doesn't handle file self-destruction for documents that need to be shared as links.
WhatsApp: Disappearing Messages with Asterisks
WhatsApp added disappearing messages with a 7-day default and later expanded to 24-hour and 90-day options. The messages are end-to-end encrypted with the Signal Protocol.
The gap: WhatsApp is owned by Meta, whose business model is advertising and behavioral analysis. WhatsApp does not read message content (it can't — E2EE prevents it), but it does retain metadata: who you talk to, when, how often, from what device and location. This metadata is deeply revealing even without content. Additionally, if you back up your WhatsApp chats to iCloud or Google Drive, those backups are not end-to-end encrypted by default, meaning Apple or Google can read your "disappeared" messages.
The 2021 policy change that triggered global user migration made explicit what was always implicit: WhatsApp's loyalty is to Meta's business interests.
iMessage: Convenient Until It Isn't
Apple's "Delete after viewing" and "Undo send" features (iOS 16+) provide UI-level ephemerality. The message is deleted from both sender and recipient devices after viewing.
The gap: iCloud backups. Unless iCloud backup is disabled or iCloud Advanced Data Protection is enabled (an opt-in feature that most users haven't heard of), iMessages are backed up to iCloud in plaintext — accessible to Apple, accessible to law enforcement, accessible to anyone who compromises your Apple ID. The "deleted" message may persist in backup for weeks.
Additionally, "Delete after viewing" requires the recipient to be on iOS 16+ and using iMessage. If they have an Android phone, you're falling back to SMS — unencrypted and permanently retained by carriers.
The Gap All Three Share: Async, Link-Based Sharing
All three messaging platforms share a fundamental architectural limitation. They are communication channels for synchronous (or near-synchronous) conversations between registered users. None of them handles the use case that Wispr addresses:
